Running For a Good Cause
The Cap10K race is an annual event sponsored by Austin Statesman and Baylor Scott & White Health that the Boundless team looks forward to participating in each year. Proceeds from the race help support local non-profit organizations—this year’s race beneficiary was The Trail Foundation, supporting the city of Austin’s hiking and biking trails. Past recipients have included Safe Place, Dell Children’s Medical Center, Swim Safe for Austin Kids, and Meals on Wheels. In addition to supporting such a great cause, we were also excited to support Baylor Scott & White, who has been a long time client of Boundless!
This year, Boundless was proud to participate in the Corporate Team Challenge with a team of twenty seven runners including a small number of friends and family.
Since its humble beginnings in 1978 the Cap10K has grown to become the largest 10K in Texas and 7th largest in the nation with over 20,5000 registered runners this year. It never disappoints avid runners and it certainly surprises beginner runners with unexpected fun along the way. The starting line was electrified with excitement! The race starts south of Lady Bird Lake and runs north bound through downtown on Congress Blvd and around the State Capital then finally finishing up back at Lady Bird Lake near the Auditorium Shores.
Anyone familiar with the Austin area knows that west bound 15th ST is about two miles of arduous hills. Then the course turns downhill to Windsted Lane to be greeted with hundreds of cheering bystanders. The course is mainly downhill from this point on, a much welcome relief after a brutal uphill run. At this point the race is at half way. Your mind and body are aching to stop and rest but there are bands playing live music and cheering crowds along the way to help runners stay motivated to push themselves to maximum performance and seek the finish line. I like to think that this is where the fun begins. Somewhere around the four mile marker is when you realize how the mind and body work together to complete a goal. For some people that goal could be your best time, your first time, or simply to have fun and feel accomplished at the end.
However, this event is not just for avid runners. Half of our team members are beginner runners and walkers. There were many participants to talk and engage with along the way for those people walking the event. This is by far my favorite race of the year, and I try my best to influence co-workers to get in on the fun. Most of us have run the Cap10K race in previous years and never hesitate to sign up for the next race, but my most favorite thing is seeing people experience it for the first time. Some of the comments I hear are, “I’m glad you talked me into this, it was fun!” and “I can’t wait for next year!”
It certainly is nice to know that Boundless encourages its employees to participate in events like this. One can realize how we are a small part of a bigger picture that supports the needs of the local community. It’s a fantastic way to kick start the spring season with a great attitude in health consciousness. Overall, Boundless placed 37th out of 55 in the Corporate Team Challenge. The biggest win I would say is the experience.
The Road Warriors
The top three finishers for Boundless are:
Carrie Pelucca (time 55:20:0) Carrie works as Inside Sales for Noel Garcia. At first, she wasn’t going to run and it took a lot of convincing to talk her into joining.
Ashley Fontenot (time 57:12:0) Ashley works as Inside Sales for Noel Garcia. It’s no wonder that Noel’s sales team is so efficient – he has the two fastest workers… literally!
Ethan Wooldridge (time 1:00:16) Ethan works in our Accounting team, and his goal was to break his time last year of 1:08:00. Congrats Ethan!
Embrace the Fun
A shout out to our awesome team members that participated! We had a great time living out our core values and embracing the fun, thanks again for coming out!
